I have something to tell you….
For the past three and a half years I have not worn “actual” makeup…
Since developing so many severe allergies I have had to cut way back on things a girl holds close to her heart..like most of my makeup, hair products and as you can see very plainly by looking at me, hair dye. While I have made my peace with the hair dye situation, I was not feeling the same way about the makeup situation. A girl can only handle so much!
I had been pretty loyal for a long time to a couple makeup brands that claimed “all natural” and “organic” as their claim to fame. Except that I learned that they were sneaking some very un-natural ingredients in without changing their labeling at all. While there is regulation with organic food products there is not that same regulation with skincare and cosmetics. So, I switched things up and then I guess I just kinda gave up. I still had a mascara that didn’t seem to bother me, eyeliner and a couple of lipsticks. Other than that I was going all-natural. After a short while, the all natural thing got old, really old, so I started begging Google to help me find my way back to the land of beauty. It was then that I stumbled upon the “crunchy” makeup trend. Crunchy…like granola…yup…wearing food on your face! I opened my spice drawer and pulled out the cinnamon and nutmeg, mixing them with arrowroot powder until I found my perfect shade for this new powdered foundation. Beetroot powder became my new blush, but it also stained my countertops and fingertips if I wasn’t careful. After a long while of doing this I experimented with making my own cream foundation, eye shadows, mascara and lip gloss. Many tries later I did come up with a foundation that worked rather well! Victory! I was back in the beauty game! That is until I opened my foundation a little while later and it had all molded. The mascara was a disaster as was the eyeliner and lipgloss. I’m pretty good at the whole DIY thing folks, but this was not working for me. Back to the basic cinnamon and nutmeg I went.
I also started to feel a little resentful if I am being truly honest with you. I had already needed to give up many foods in this quest to regain my health…and yes, I also let my hair go gray…which isn’t easy when you are only 38 years old. My life mantra is to make the best out of every situation no matter what, so I put on my smile and went makeupless most of the time. I did end up finding an under-eye concealer that had some okish ingredients I wore sometimes when I wanted to be all fancy, and I held onto my red lipstick. Every girl needs something to hold on to!
Google and I have still been working together (aka endlessly surfing the interwebs) to find some beauty products that were safe and nontoxic. Where would we be without Google right!!!! The last several months a company has captured my attention. I began to see mentions of Beautycounter pop up in my social media feeds as well as on blog posts by some bloggers that I highly respect. More and more women who are as passionate about health and wellness as I am began to sing the praises of this skin care and makeup.
Skin care is another thing I had to let fall to the wayside. Coconut oil and sometimes homemade tallow have been the only things caring for my face these last years. Admittedly, they worked ok but I was missing some self-care products that were not also serving double duty in my kitchen. I was missing feeling pampered and let’s face it…I am aging and want to have youthful skin as I enter my 40’s here soon! You can’t turn back time, but ya can have some great skin care to make it look like you have!
I finally decided to give Beautycounter products a try and it was like finding a piece of myself that I had been missing. Sound like I am being over the top in my declared love? Maybe…but going without makeup and skin care has left me feeling less girly than I liked….I felt like ME again!!!!
One of the first things to capture my attention about Beautycounter was their mission to bring both awareness about the harmful chemicals being used in everyday beauty products as well as to change legislation and standards in the skincare industry. Did you know that the last time any regulations were made regarding the safety of skin care products was 1938??? We all know that a lot has changed since then! Only around 10% of the over 10,000 chemicals found in skincare products have ever been tested for safety! The European Union has been working diligently to ban or restrict close to 1,400 of these these ingredients while the good old USA has banned 11.
WE CAN DO BETTER!!!!!
Our skin is our bodies largest organ and it absorbs what we put on it. The products we use matter!
Take a minute and think about all the products you put on your skin daily….
…this list could go on and on!
If you know me at all, you know that I am passionate about healthy eating and having a healthy lifestyle. Having safe, non toxic skin care and makeup is a big part of that! As I stated at the beginning of this post, I put most of my beauty products aside until I could find a company that was honest about what they used in their products. I have found that company! Beautycounter has released their Never List, a list of 1,500 harmful ingredients that they promise never to use. On top of that you can find a full list of all ingredients used in every single Beautycounter product! No guessing or wondering! This company is all about full disclosure and high standards!
The most amazing part about Beautycounter for me though is how well these products work! We are talking about high performing makeup here folks! None of this smudging, running and glopping business! My first two products were a lipgloss and a blush (that I bought at Target thru their limited line with Beuatycounter). I put them on and looked in the mirror…could it be??? A safe, non toxic makeup line that actually worked and looked like the high performing department store makeup brands!!! Oh happy day! My husband even noticed when he came home! I was hooked!
After trying Beautycounter products I went to the Environmental Working Groups website and looked up some ratings on the makeup I had been using before. I was stunned! One of my lipsticks (my favorite red one) had a rating of 7…high ratings here are bad…like potentially cancerous and hazardous bad. I looked thru the products I had used in the past and the few I was currently using and felt disgusted. Even the ones who were claiming “natural” on their packaging and advertising were less than great. In fact lots of them were scary! Go ahead and check for yourself! You can go to www.environmentalworkinggroup.org and check your products there. They also have a handy dandy app you can download!
Beauty counter uses both organic and synthetic ingredients to achieve their high performance but they never, ever compromise on the safety of these ingredients. They are the first in the cosmetic industry to to use such a rigorous screening process that includes evaluation for skin irritation, toxicity, carcegens and every single batch of their color cosmetics is tested for harmful metals.
When I saw how well these products worked and how high Beautycounters standards were I jumped in with both feet! My makeup bag is full of beautiful cosmetics once again and my bathroom counter does not look like my spice drawer! The skin care line is luxurious!
While I will sing the praises of my Beautycounter mascara, and so will my girls…you don’t have to just take our word for it! Allure Magazine has given our Lengthening Mascara their coveted Best Of Beauty award for 2016!!! Beautycounter has won this award for the last three years with different products! This mascara has zero harmful ingredients in it but performs better than any other mascara I have tried. You will find that it goes on without clumping and gives you long, lovely lashes!
Another one of my very favorite products is our Charcoal Cleansing Bar. I had never used a charcoal soap before and was a bit hesitant to try it. After all, it is a charcoal soap bar that you are putting on your skin! I had been told that this was a favorite of many…so I gave it a try…and….I LOVE it! My skin feels so fresh and clean after washing my face with this soap!
As you can see, Beautycounter has a full array of skin care and makeup products to meet you every beauty-loving dream! I have barely scratched the surface here with this post! Actually, I haven’t even told you about all of my favorites!
